Pulp Therapy

When your child has a deep cavity or toothache, it can feel stressful for everyone. At edc Smiles Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics, we provide gentle, kid-focused pulpotomies, often called baby root canals, to help save damaged baby teeth and keep your child comfortable.

Our Frisco team is trained to care for infants, children, teens, and those with special needs in a calm, relaxing environment. We focus on explaining each step in simple terms so you and your child feel confident about the care you are receiving.

Why Pulpotomies Can Be Helpful for Your Child

A pulpotomy is a treatment used when a cavity reaches the nerve of a baby tooth but the root is still healthy. Instead of removing the tooth, we carefully treat the affected nerve area so the tooth can stay in place and keep your child chewing, speaking, and smiling comfortably.

Preserving baby teeth with pulpotomies can help your child by:

Reducing pain from deep cavities or inflammation

Saving the tooth so it can hold space for the adult tooth

Helping your child eat and speak more comfortably

Supporting normal jaw and bite development

Our goal is to relieve your child’s discomfort while protecting their long-term oral health and confidence. We combine prevention, education, and thoughtful treatment planning so you understand why a pulpotomy is recommended and how it fits into your child’s overall care.

What to Expect During a Pulpotomy Visit

From the moment you walk in, our team works to keep your child relaxed and reassured. Before any treatment begins, we examine your child’s tooth, review digital X-rays when needed, and talk through the diagnosis in plain language.

During the pulpotomy, the tooth is numbed to keep your child comfortable. The dentist removes the damaged part of the nerve tissue inside the crown of the tooth, places a special medicated material, and then restores the tooth, often with a crown to protect it. For anxious or very young children, we offer behavior guidance and options such as nitrous oxide or oral sedation when appropriate, with safety and comfort as top priorities.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Pulp Therapy FAQs

How do I know if my child needs a pulpotomy?

Pulpotomies are usually recommended when a cavity or injury reaches the nerve of a baby tooth and is causing pain or showing signs of infection. After an exam and X-rays, we will explain if a simple filling, a pulpotomy, or another treatment is the best option for your child.

Is a pulpotomy painful for my child?

Your child’s comfort is our priority. We numb the tooth and surrounding area before starting, and we talk your child through each step in a calm, child-friendly way. Some mild soreness afterward is possible, but most children handle it very well.

Why not just pull the baby tooth instead?

Baby teeth act as guides for adult teeth and are important for chewing, speaking, and jaw development. If the roots are still healthy, a pulpotomy allows us to keep the tooth in place instead of removing it, which can help avoid shifting teeth or spacing issues later.

Is a pulpotomy the same as a root canal?

Pulpotomies are often called baby root canals, but they are more limited than a full root canal on an adult tooth. In a pulpotomy, only the affected nerve tissue in the crown portion of the tooth is treated, while the healthy root structure is preserved.

Will my child need a crown after a pulpotomy?

In many cases, yes. After a pulpotomy, the tooth is often restored with a crown to protect it and help it last until it is naturally ready to fall out. We will review options for stainless steel or tooth-colored crowns based on the tooth and your child’s needs.

Are pulpotomies safe for young children?

Pulpotomies are a common, well-established procedure in pediatric dentistry. Our team has specific training and experience working with children, including very young patients, and follows evidence-based protocols to help keep treatment as safe and comfortable as possible.

How do I care for my child’s tooth after a pulpotomy?

We will give you simple, clear instructions after the visit, which may include soft foods for a short time, regular brushing, and watching for any unusual swelling or discomfort. We also review prevention tips to help protect the rest of your child’s teeth going forward.
